Park Cuppa at Cally Clock Tower Centre on Wednesdays

older women looking with interest that a woman is showing to them.

At one of our weekly Wednesday Park Cuppa sessions at Cally Clock Tower Centre last month, we had a fascinating session with the British Museum. They brought along intriguing objects from their handling collection. This included an African board game that Sharon, who volunteers at the Park Cuppa recognised from her childhood.

African wooden board game with seeds

Sharon told us, "The old Museum African Board game that the British Museum shared at one of our recent coffee mornings is an age-old seed game that was traditionally played across Africa. The game and variations of the game are known by different names in different African countries including 'Senet' in Egypt, 'Mbao' in Tanzania, 'Gabeti' in Ethiopia. I know the seed game as Oware from Ghana and used to play and teach it to Primary aged children.

There is an Oware Society based in London. As well as teaching the game to interested persons, the OS also runs tournaments. The game promotes some maths and strategy skills and they used to take and display beautiful hand crafted Oware boards to schools."
