Black History Month is a national awareness month that takes place every October. The theme for 2024, “Reclaiming Narratives,” marks a significant shift towards recognising and correcting the narratives of Black history and culture. 

There are a number of events taking place in Islington in libraries and other community venues that you might like to attend - don't forget to book where needed! 

Black History Month Author Event: Phoebe McIntosh
Wednesday 2 October, 6.30-7.30pm

Archway Library, Hamlyn House, Highgate Hill, N19 5PH

Join for a conversation with author, actress and playwright Phoebe McIntosh. Her debut novel Dominoes revolves around a mixed-race British woman who makes the shocking discovery that her fiancé’s family may have enslaved her ancestors.

Wednesday 16 October, 6.30-7.30pm

Join for a conversation with Grenadian heritage writer Pam Williams who was longlisted for the 2024 Women’s Prize for fiction for her debut novel ‘A Trace of Sun’.

Film Screening and Q&A
Friday 16 October, 7-8.30pm
Whittington Park Community Centre, Yerbury Road, N19 4RS

As part of Black History Month, Whittington Park Community Centre are holding a film screening and Q&A for Drawn Out, the film created by their youth group, in collaboration with Ambitious Academy, Arsenal in the Community, Islington Giving and Elthorne Pride. This will be followed by a Q&A with the youth group.

Health and Wellbeing Workshop: Cultural Evening in celebration of Black History Month
Saturday 19 October, 12-4.30pm
Brickworks Community Centre, 42 Crouch Hill, N4 4BY

Come along for a fun filled afternoon with entertainment including Zumba fitness, jazz solo artist, drumming, steel band music, poetry and dancing. Refreshments served at 1pm. For more information call 020 7263 1067 or email admin@hanleycrouch.org.uk

Tracing African Ancestry Back to the Early 1800s with Paul Crooks

Join Black history speaker Paul Crooks for an insightful masterclass on tracing African ancestry. Known for his pioneering research into Black ancestry, Paul Crooks will delve into the legacy of British slave-ownership and Black British heritage, focusing on the African Caribbean and African American communities.

Heritage on a Plate Event

Come join us at the Brickworks Community Centre for a delicious journey through the flavours of our heritage! Fostering a sense of heritage and community through the shared experience of cooking and enjoying traditional Black cuisine. This project event aims to celebrate Black History Month by creating an enriching and interactive environment where stories, traditions, and recipes are passed down, highlighting the cultural significance of food.
