We kicked off the festive season on Wednesday 7 December with a Festive Lunch Party at Elizabeth House Community Centre.

Carmen Alcovedes, Activities Co-ordinator said - The Age UK Islington Festive Lunch was made possible by our corporate partner Okta who very generously supported us on the day. It was great to work with Roshni from Elizabeth House Community Centre.  The centre provided a nice big space that could comfortably accommodate th80 clients and volunteers who attended the 3 course festive lunch, cooked and delivered by community organisation Hillside Clubhouse.

The 3 course meal was followed by a raffle & a quiz with prizes handed out by Santa Claus, and we closed the event with a music sing-along. The atmosphere was of happiness and joy, and attendees were delighted to meet up again with people they hadn’t seen in years and make new acquaintances.

Charline - It was beautiful, I enjoyed it. The food was lovely and the turkey was nice and soft. I met a lady from Barbados.  I don't know so many people and can't get out these days.  If it hadn't have been for help from Age UK Islington, I would not have been able to get to the lunch. I would like to get more involved now. Christmas for me is a festive, happy day and about going to the church if you can.

Arthur - I saw a lot of faces that I hadn't seen for years!  The more we can go out and communicate with everyone helps keep you out of the doctors.  It's only when we talk with each another, we can solve things.  Christmas for me is about 'Peace and bringing people together'.

Janet - I was very impressed.  It was well organised and fun. Recently I have had a lot of ill health.  There were no Christmas parties for me since 2018.  When you have not been well you lose confidence and it can be difficult to get out again.  But I am very glad I got out.

The meaning of Christmas seems to have been lost these days.  It is very gaudy and more about the gifts.  Food has gone up in the shops by 50%.  Like everyone else I have been trying to economise.  I do one-pan cooking and cook everything in the oven in one batch for the next few days.

Geraldine - The staff of Age UK Islington and Okta went to great trouble.  I had a good conversation with a very nice young man sitting next to me and we exchanged contact details.  Christmas always reminds me of my father and I used to love filling Christmas stockings with small things for my children.  It should be about peace, love and one world united, working together and forgetting our differences.
