Jo and Colin run Dementia Friendly walks in Gillespie and Cally Parks and are helping Islington to become a Dementia Friendly Community.

  1. How have you helped Islington work towards becoming a Dementia Friendly Community?

We’ve done the Dementia Friends training along with our colleagues. The training has helped us to run Dementia Friendly walks in Gillespie and Cally parks.

Jo: Nature is a great way to get people out of the house – sights and smells are a great way of triggering memories and conversations.

Colin: The walks also help to tackle social isolation - getting people out and about and feeling like a part of their community.

  1. How has becoming a Dementia Friend impacted your work?

Jo: A lot of the things that you can do to become Dementia Friendly actually helps the walks and our venues be more accessible for everyone.

Colin: It’s creating a fairer borough too – it helps to break down some of the invisible barriers to accessing our services and venues that different groups of people experience.
