Statement from Jo Dare, CEO, Age UK Isle of Wight:
We would like to firstly say thank you to all that have been in touch, offering to volunteer during these unprecedented times. The response from people across the Island is fantastic. We have had hundreds of people lending their support and we are truly grateful to everyone for expressing an interest to be involved as we face this national, and very local, emergency.
As I’m sure you can imagine, co-ordination is no easy task, especially when guidelines are ever-evolving but we are adapting. For anyone who has expressed an early interest and yet to hear back, please bear with us.
Sadly, but understandably, some offers from some individuals, organisations and local businesses made a few days ago, are no longer available due to self-isolation or business closures but we still need to provide support in the following 3 key areas:
· Shopping
· Prescription collection
· Telephone or digital befriending, and wellbeing checks
We therefore really need anyone able, but who’ve not already done so, to register your support: bit.ly/volsupport and please do not feel disheartened if you are not enlisted immediately. This is a marathon not a sprint and as the pandemic continues, your help will be even more crucial in a few weeks’ time.
When you register, you will be asked to complete a simple application form which we will use to safeguard and protect everyone during this difficult time. Once a volunteer, you will be provided with a Letter of Authorisation to evidence that you are working with us.
In the meantime, you can help right now by signposting our information posts on our social media pages, including our ‘Can You Help’ volunteers registration form.
Finally, please rest assured that are working hard with other local organisations, including other charities, pharmacies and supermarkets, to build a network that maximises our resources to deliver support in the most efficient and effective way, so we can help more people who need us.
