3G switch off

By the end of 2025, the 3G network will be switched off. This could affect some people’s mobile phones, tablets and telehealth devices. Find out what, if anything, you need to do.

What is 3G and why is it being switched off?

The 3G network is a way of connecting to the internet from mobile devices (smartphones, tablets, pet trackers and some telehealth devices, for example). It’s an older network, and there are now faster and more reliable 4G and 5G networks available. This is why it’s being switched off.

When will the 3G network be switched off?

Most network operators have already switched off their 3G networks. O2 are the last company to switch off their 3G network, which will happen by the end of 2025. After this, it won’t be possible to access 3G.

How could this affect me?

If your smartphone, tablet, tracker or telehealth device currently uses the 3G network, soon you won’t be able to connect to the internet this way anymore.

If your phone or tablet uses 3G

Once 3G is switched off, apps like WhatsApp and Facebook won’t work when you’re out and about, and you won’t be able to receive emails or look things up on websites when you’re not connected to Wi-Fi.

For now, you will still be able to make and receive phone calls and send and receive texts as normal. If your device is able to connect to Wi-Fi networks, you can still access the internet this way.

If your telehealth device or pet tracker uses 3G

You should contact the provider or maker of your device – they’ll be able to tell you if your device will still work as normal or if you need a replacement. Make sure you do this in good time so you’re not left in a position where your device won’t work when you need it.

What do I need to do?

If you want to be able to keep accessing the internet via your smartphone or tablet while out and about, you should check whether your device supports 4G or 5G. If it does, you will be able to keep using your phone or tablet as you have been doing. To get help, call your network provider, visit their website or pop into a local shop, if they have one.

If your phone or tablet doesn’t support 4G or 5G and you want to use it to access the internet while out and about, you will need to upgrade to a newer device that does support 4G. You don’t have to do this with your current phone or tablet provider – you’re free to shop around for a device wherever you like.

Some retailers may try and talk you into buying a new device or service that you do not need or want. A good retailer will give you all the information you need to make a decision and will never pressure you into making a particular choice. Citizens Advice have information about what to do if you were misled or pressured into buying something you didn’t want.

Refurbished and second-hand devices are often cheaper and can provide good performance, depending on the age and quality of the device. Always check information about the device before you buy, to make sure it’s right for you.

What happens if I do nothing?

If your device is compatible with 4G or 5G, you don’t need to do anything.

If your device isn’t compatible with 4G or 5G, it's your choice whether or not to upgrade to a new device. You should speak to your network provider to find out what your device will and won’t be able to do, and then make a decision based on what you need.
