Tommy's medals

The Joining Forces programme has now ended

Joining Forces was an Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust supported programme in partnership with SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity. It was delivered by 12 local projects across England by local Age UKs and SSAFA branches. After 3 successful years, the programme has now ended. Many of the pages in this section will still be useful for information and advice. Alternatively, you can look at the relevant sections of the Age UK website.

Earlier this year, we joined Age UK Gloucestershire's Joining Forces project to visit the Soldiers Of Gloucestershire Museum. There the veterans learned about 'Digital storytelling', the process of discussing items from their military days, with the stories recorded for posterity.

You can find out more about digital storytelling here.

While we were there, we met 88-year-old Tommy Clough. Tommy was in the army for 32 years, which included service during the Korean War (1950-1953), during which he was a prisoner of war. A man with plenty of stories to tell, we asked Tommy to talk us through the stories attached to his many medals, which he did with great gusto and honesty.
