Age UK Hythe, Lyminge & Ashford Teams Up with Dunelm to Spread Christmas Cheer

Published on 19 December 2024 06:39 PM

The Christmas season is a time for togetherness, joy, and giving. But for many older people, especially those who may be struggling with loneliness, isolation, or financial hardship, it can be a particularly tough time of year. That’s why Age UK Hythe, Lyminge & Ashford has partnered with Dunelm this festive season to bring a little Christmas cheer to those who need it most. Through the Delivering Joy initiative, this collaboration aims to ensure that older people in the local community aren’t left without a gift to open.

For the last four years, Dunelm’s national Delivering Joy campaign has been spreading festive cheer by delivering gifts to older people who may not otherwise receive one. This year, Age UK Hythe, Lyminge & Ashford is proud to be a part of that mission, helping to bring smiles to the faces of older residents in Hythe, Lyminge, Ashford, and the surrounding areas. With a combined effort from the charity and local community, the aim is to make sure no one is forgotten this Christmas.

Bringing the Community Together

Christmas is often described as the season of giving, but it’s also about coming together as a community to support one another. Sadly, for many older people, the holiday season can be an isolating experience. With limited social interaction, financial struggles, and sometimes poor health, the holidays can feel less joyful. That’s where the Delivering Joy initiative comes in—offering a practical way for everyone to help make a positive difference.

By partnering with Dunelm, Age UK Hythe, Lyminge & Ashford is able to provide thoughtful, personalised gifts to older people in need. Whether it’s a winter scarf, a new pair of slippers, or a little treat like chocolates or tea, these gifts can have a powerful impact, making someone feel remembered, valued, and cared for.

How the Delivering Joy Initiative Works

It’s simple to get involved and make a difference this Christmas. Dunelm has made it easy for the community to participate by setting up a system where you can pick a tag from a Christmas tree in-store and then fulfil a specific gift request from an older person. Here’s how it works:

Visit Your Local Dunelm Store

In each Dunelm store across the country, you’ll find a Christmas tree decorated with tags. Each tag has a personalised gift request from an older person in need. These individuals might live in care homes or receive support from Age UK Hythe, Lyminge & Ashford.

Pick a Tag

Simply take a tag that resonates with you or one that fits what you feel comfortable giving. Requests might range from winter essentials like hats, scarves, and gloves to toiletries or small treats such as chocolates, biscuits, or tea.

Fulfil the Gift Request

Purchase the item (it doesn’t have to be from Dunelm, it can be from anywhere) and return it to the store along with the tag. This is a wonderful way to give back while also supporting a local initiative that benefits your community.

Dunelm Does the Rest

After you’ve dropped off your gift at the store, Dunelm will ensure it reaches the intended recipient in time for Christmas. Your thoughtful gift will be delivered to an older person in the community who is in need of some festive cheer.

The beauty of the initiative is in its simplicity. What may seem like a small gesture can have a profound effect on someone’s Christmas experience.

The Joy of Giving

Cleo Smith BEM, Chief Officer at Age UK Hythe, Lyminge & Ashford, shared how meaningful this partnership is for the local community: “We’re thrilled to be part of Delivering Joy this year. The simple act of giving a small gift can mean so much, particularly for older people who might be spending Christmas alone or struggling financially. Dunelm’s generosity and the community’s support help us spread a little joy to those who need it most.”

For those who are isolated or may be facing financial difficulties, receiving a gift can be a lifeline, offering a reminder that others care. Many older people might feel that their needs aren’t a priority or that they are invisible during the festive season. Delivering Joy seeks to change that narrative, letting them know they are valued and remembered.

Amanda Cox, People and Stores Director at Dunelm, echoed Cleo’s sentiment, adding, “Each year, we’re amazed by the generosity of our customers and colleagues. It’s humbling to see how many people want to help make a difference. We are proud to partner with charities like Age UK, whose vital work ensures that the most vulnerable people in our communities are not forgotten during the holidays.”

The Impact of Small Acts of Kindness

Sometimes, it’s the small things that have the biggest impact. For older people, something as simple as a new hat or a chocolate bar can make a big difference. These thoughtful gifts, no matter how modest, show kindness and compassion—qualities that are especially needed during the winter months.

In many cases, these gifts offer more than just practical support; they provide emotional comfort as well. The knowledge that someone took the time to pick out a gift for them is incredibly meaningful and can help alleviate feelings of loneliness and isolation that often increase at Christmas.

Get Involved and Spread the Joy

So, how can you get involved this Christmas? It’s easy! Head to your local Dunelm store, pick up a tag, and start spreading the joy. Whether you’re shopping for a winter hat, a lovely pair of socks, or something sweet for someone’s tea break, every little bit helps. And by doing so, you’ll be part of a community effort to ensure that older people in your area experience the kindness and warmth of the festive season.

Let’s make this Christmas the most joyful yet—for everyone. Together, we can make sure no one is left behind.
