Meet Asako - Sax House Lunch Club Volunteer

Brief Background

Asako is originally from Japan but has lived in the UK since she met her husband.

When her daughter started school, Asako had some free time and wanted to do something that would fit around school hours, so friends suggested that maybe she could care for others in the community by becoming a volunteer.

How long have you volunteered for?

8 years.

Why did you choose Volunteering for Age UK Hertfordshire?

I knew about the work Age UK did so I spoke to somebody and asked about the services available & we discussed the 10-3 club.

I originally started at their club in Baldock but due to Covid19 it had to close.

I visited people in a care home with my supervisor, but found it quite difficult as we had to wear masks so communication wasn’t easy at times. It wasn’t the same as helping in the clubs, so I was really pleased to get back to the club environment and I moved to the club in Letchworth when it opened.

What’s the best thing about being a volunteer?

The clients – I love talking to them. They are amazing people.

Getting old is a scary thing – nobody knows what is around the corner. Seeing great people gives me hope.

If I can make somebody laugh, it makes my day.
