Celebrating our Pershore Allotment this National Allotment Week

Published on 12 August 2024 09:58 AM

Five years ago I found myself with a little spare time and thought I would look out for a volunteering role, but didn't really know what to go for.

The Age UK Herefordshire & Worcestershire (H&W) site came to my notice and I was particularly attracted by the article about the allotment in Pershore. This was something different!

I have always liked gardening, although vegetables only played a small role in my own garden. I went along to see what it was like and was impressed by the work other gardeners had undertaken on the site and the welcome I received.

I soon got digging (better than a fitness class), sowing and planting and loved the exciting feeling when new shoots started to emerge. Better still, the other participants were friendly, chatty and knowledgeable.

Over the weeks and months (two hours on a Tuesday, when not on holiday or visiting grandchildren!) I learnt how deep, how far apart and where to sow or plant potatoes, sweetcorn, tomatoes, courgettes, beans, parsnips, carrots, beetroot, onions, garlic, strawberries and more.

During the seasons we watered, hoed, tied up and thinned out plants, as required, with some excellent sharing of knowledge and tips. Our small team constructed a greenhouse, a polytunnel and made and spread our own compost, as well as manure provided by another allotment holder.

The icing on the cake has to be harvesting our wonderful produce - whether misshapen or perfect in form!

We all take pride in the boxes of fruit and veg that go back to Age UK H&W for small donations and, of course, very much enjoy taking some home. There is something very special about eating food that you have had a hand in growing.

Over the years (I can't believe five have passed already) I have learnt so much, and continue to learn and share my knowledge. I have been fortunate to receive first aid training from Age UK H&W and to make some lovely friends and, in turn, enjoy welcoming all newcomers to the plot to join our happy team.
