Finding Purpose through Volunteering

Published on 22 October 2024 10:00 AM

After a life-changing accident left me unable to work, I found myself searching for something meaningful to keep me active. I wanted something close to home and reached out to Age UK Hammersmith & Fulham. Now, three years later, I can honestly say that volunteering here has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

What I love most about volunteering at Age UK Hammersmith & Fulham is the warm, friendly environment. It’s a place where you truly feel part of a team, and that sense of community is something I cherish.

Helping service users is incredibly fulfilling. They’re always so grateful for the assistance, and that gratitude boosts my confidence. I especially enjoy empowering them with digital skills - whether it’s teaching them how to use their phones, send emails, or even navigate social media. Every individual brings unique questions and challenges, which means I’m constantly learning new things myself. It’s a wonderful exchange of knowledge that keeps my mind sharp.

As a Digital Champion volunteer, I help clients with a range of tasks, including setting up email accounts, browsing the internet, booking holidays, or online shopping. It’s rewarding to see how these skills help them stay connected with loved ones and become more independent. Many older people feel isolated because they can’t access online services, and often don’t have anyone else to turn to. As a volunteer, I am happy I can make such a difference in their lives.

Having this role gives my week structure and keeps me busy in a professional environment. It’s also been a key part of my recovery, giving me the opportunity to stay active and rebuild my confidence. Age UK Hammersmith & Fulham is an incredible charity doing vital work in the community, and I’m proud to be part of it.

Volunteering at Age UK Hammersmith & Fulham has given me so much - purpose, connection, and a way to give back to my community. If you’re looking for a fulfilling way to spend your time, I highly encourage you to consider joining us. There’s a role for everyone, and the impact you can make is truly life changing.
