Community and Purpose Through Volunteering

Published on 18 November 2024 12:00 PM

After retiring, I really wanted to give back through volunteering, and Age UK Hammersmith & Fulham immediately stood out to me. Due to my health, working with children or standing for long periods wasn't an option, and I knew a charity shop wasn’t the best fit either. However, working in an office setting was perfect! It’s close to my home, and with my background as an office administrator, I knew I could contribute valuable skills.

What I love most is the sense of community among the other volunteers and staff. Everyone is so friendly and supportive, making it more than just about work. I also find great fulfilment in helping service users. Many come to us with problems, and I enjoy empowering them with the information they need. It’s a great feeling when someone is grateful for the knowledge I’ve shared, and knowing I’ve made a difference in their day makes me happy.

Volunteering is also important for my wellbeing. I can get a bit lonely at times, so having the opportunity to connect with others and help out is very rewarding. I don’t have grandchildren, so I have extra time, and I believe staying active is essential for good health. Reception work helps keep my mind sharp and allows me to maintain the skills I used throughout my career. It also gives me structure and routine, which helps me plan my week.

For anyone with time on their hands, I highly recommend volunteering. Working with Age UK Hammersmith & Fulham is a wonderful way to meet new people and be part of something meaningful.
