Telephone Landlines

What's changing...
You may have heard some chatter about landlines being phased out and perhaps you’re feeling confused or worried about how this will affect you. The UK’s telephone network is being upgraded to a digital system, which means the landline service is changing. For most, switching will be straightforward, but some people may need new equipment or support to make the changes. Here are the important things you need to know.
Will I Need an Internet Connection?
Yes, but don’t worry if you don’t have one now. If you already have broadband, your new landline will work through that connection. If not, your phone provider (such as BT or Virgin Media O2) will provide what’s needed to keep your landline working. This is usually at no extra cost unless you choose to add full broadband. Some providers may stop offering landlines. If that happens, you might need to switch providers, which could increase your costs.
How Will the Switch Work?
Your provider will contact you to explain the timing and steps involved. In some cases, an engineer may need to visit. If you have broadband, you’ll likely plug your phone into your router or use an adapter supplied by your provider. Homes with multiple phone sockets may need additional adapters, but your provider will guide you through this. If you have questions or concerns, let your provider know - they can offer extra help. You may also be able to delay switching if you’re not ready. Once switched, your landline will work as before, but you’ll need to dial the area code even for local calls.
What If My Landline and Broadband Providers Are Different?
If your landline and broadband providers are different, you’ll have the option to switch to a single provider or keep both if they support the transition.
Can I Keep My Phone Number?
Yes, you can usually keep your current phone number.
Will I Need a New Phone?
Most existing handsets will work with the digital system. If a new phone is needed, your provider will let you know and help you find the right option.
Will my new phone contract be more expensive?
For most, costs won’t change. BT has confirmed no price increases for customers, and Virgin Media O2 has made similar assurances. However, if your provider stops offering landlines and you have to switch, your new contract might cost more.
What About Telecare and Alarm Systems?
Telecare devices and equipment such as personal or security alarms may be affected if they're connected to your phone line. You should contact your device supplier to check if your device will work with the new system or whether any equipment will need to be upgraded. If you’re buying a new device, check with the manufacturer or seller to ensure it works with the digital system. Providers are working with the Government to ensure telecare users won’t switch until their systems are ready.
What Happens During a Power Cut?
Digital phones need electricity, so they won’t work in a power cut unless they have a battery backup. Providers recommend having a mobile phone for emergencies. If you don’t have a mobile phone or live in an area with poor signal, your provider must offer a free “resilience solution,” such as a battery backup for your landline or a mobile phone, to ensure you can make emergency calls.
When Will These Changes Happen?
The changeover has already begun, and some people are using the digital system. For most people the switch will take place by January 2027.
