Marie Lloyd Centre: A September to Remember

Published on 04 September 2024 10:31 AM

Since the doors of the Marie Lloyd Centre opened this summer, the centre has already started making a difference…

All summer the charities in-residence have been running activities and services for older people, adults and young people with disabilities and carers. Trialling various activities and listening to visitors’ feedback has helped us create a packed September activity schedule. Drop in to chat with Richard, the Centre Manager, or join a session and see for yourself.

Community

The Marie Lloyd Centre has been serving the wider community in Hackney too, playing host to Neighbourhoods Summer Summit and a frailty awareness launch, demonstrating its role as a vibrant hub for Hackney’s residents. The next big event is Carers Wellbeing Day hosted by City & Hackney Carers on Thursday 12th September from 10am-2.30pm.

Amplifying Older People's Voices

The Hackney Older People’s Reference Group has officially moved it’s meeting to the Marie Lloyd Centre. Meeting four times a year, and led by a democratically elected Chair , Hackney’s older residents come together to have their say on local services and decisions affecting them.

Feasting

The kitchen is the heart of the home and it’s no different at the Centre. Holly Street Luncheon Club is serving delicious, nutritious food three times a week, Tues, Weds and Thurs (booking essential).

Starting from 23rd September, Eat Club are offering a six-week cookery course to help people make the most of low budgets and enjoy the connections we gain from cooking and eating together.

Connecting

Older people have told us that support to get online and stay safe is essential to staying connected with loved ones and many basics like banking. Age UK East London and MRS Independent Living are offering in-person courses and drop-ins for older people to gain confidence in the online world.

Looking after mind and body

Pilates, dance, yoga, falls prevention and chair activities, delivered by professionals in the comfort of the Centre’s spacious Garden Room mean that there’s an abundance of ways to stay active.

Many of the charity partners offer targeted wellbeing services for carers and those with disabilities.
