Challenge Poverty Week

Published on 12 October 2022 11:45 AM

From the 17th October it’s Challenge Poverty Week – Let’s make sure everybody is getting the Pension Credit they deserve.

Up to one-million older people are missing out on their pension credit. Estimates show that a whopping £1.7 billion of this essential benefit is being left unclaimed and that claimants could get up to an extra £3,300 a year.

Tower Hamlets, Newham, and Hackney have the highest rates of pensioner poverty in the country. This means that much of this unclaimed benefit is here in East London and that this available income could go a long way to helping older people in the community during a cost-of-living crisis.

“Independent research indicates that 2 out of 5 people who are eligible for pension credit are not claiming it.  If your weekly income is less than £182.60 if you're single, or £278.70 if you're a couple then you should see an independent Age UK East London advisor as soon as you can.”  Adam Pervoe, Head of Advice, Advocacy and Integration, Age UK East London.
