Age Cymru Dyfed Helping to Create Winter Warmth in West Wales

Benefits postcard

Now is the time to get your heating and home energy checked, and to access information and advice to claim unrealised pension benefits, as thousands of West Wales pensioners continue to miss out.

As the colder months approach, it's crucial for residents, especially older individuals, to prepare their homes and finances for the challenges ahead. Age Cymru Dyfed is stepping up its efforts to ensure that pensioners in Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, and Ceredigion have the support they need to stay warm and financially secure this winter.

Rising costs and their impact

The recent announcement of a 10% increase in the energy price cap has caused widespread concern, particularly among the elderly, who often rely on fixed incomes. This, coupled with the government's plan to reduce Winter Fuel Payments with minimal notice, could leave many pensioners in a vulnerable position. The impact is expected to be detrimental, where many older residents depend on these payments to manage their energy bills during the coldest months.

Simon Wright, CEO of Age Cymru Dyfed, expressed his concerns:

"We’re worried that some older people might feel pressured to turn down or even switch off their heating to save money. This could have serious health consequences and increase the burden on our health and social care services this winter. The cost-of-living crisis has already been challenging for many, with over half of the older people we spoke to in Wales facing difficulties in the last year, particularly concerning their physical health."

Wright also highlighted the financial strain pensioners will face this winter, with up to £600 less in government support for heating bills compared to last year. He emphasised the importance of ensuring that those who are eligible for benefits, such as Pension Credit, are receiving them with around 7,000 pensioners thought to be missing out this year in West Wales alone.

Support available: don’t miss out on benefits

Age Cymru Dyfed is urging pensioners across West Wales to check their eligibility for benefits like Pension Credit, which not only provides financial support but also opens the door to other benefits, including Winter Fuel Payments. Many older people are unaware that they qualify, and even those who have been turned down before may now be eligible due to changes in benefit rates or their financial situation.

The charity offers free, confidential, and impartial advice on benefit entitlements and can assist with the claims process. Given that millions of pounds in benefits go unclaimed each year in Wales, this support is more critical than ever.

Preparing your home for winter

With the winter fast approaching, now is the ideal time to ensure your home heating system is functioning efficiently. Age Cymru Dyfed advises all residents, whether they use gas, electric, or solid fuel heating, to have their systems checked by a qualified engineer. A well-maintained heating system is not only safer but also more economical, which is particularly important in light of the upcoming changes to Winter Fuel Payments.

Maintaining a warm home is vital for health, especially for those with heart or respiratory conditions. Age Cymru Dyfed is also offering free Home Energy Checks for residents of Carmarthenshire as part of the Warm Homes Scheme. This initiative aims to help those concerned about their energy bills by providing advice and support to improve home energy efficiency.

Combatting loneliness during the winter months

The winter season can be isolating for many older people, exacerbated by the need to cut back on social activities due to rising costs. Age Cymru Dyfed is addressing this issue by promoting befriending activities in local communities. They encourage those feeling lonely or isolated to reach out and connect with others through these programmes.
