To raise awareness for Dementia Action Week, 13th-19th May, Age UK Coventry and Warwickshire invited Mayors in the Warwickshire area to attend their local Dementia Day Opportunities Centre. Councillor Maggie O'Rourke, Mayor of Rugby, visited the service at the Claremont Centre, Rugby and had the opportunity to speak with Director of Services, Reece McLarnon. Cllr Maggie O'Rourke took the time to speak with staff, volunteers and clients.
Councillor Oliver Jacques, Mayor of Warwick, visited the service at Yeomanry Close, Warwick and had the opportunity to speak with Services Manager, Jade Tomlinson also along with staff, volunteers and clients. Cllr Oliver Jacques had a laugh with some of the clients and had an insight into the entertainment planned for that day.
This year’s Dementia Action week focuses on diagnosis, as there has been a sustained drop in dementia diagnosis rates for the first time ever. In our area - Coventry and Warwickshire there are an estimated 11,700 people living with dementia, with only around 56% of these having a formal diagnosis.
An early and accurate diagnosis can provide access to support both for the person with the diagnosis and their carer. Such support may include therapies, groups, medicines and may increase entitlement to financial benefits.
Information given to you following a diagnosis will help people around you understand what you’re going through and what you have been dealing with- dementia can cause changes to mood and behaviour.
Age UK Coventry and Warwickshire have a range of support for those who have a diagnosis of dementia.
