Partnerships come in many shapes and sizes but the important factor is that they are mutually beneficial. Age UK Coventry and Warwickshire and Bablake Junior School believe this is exactly what they have both enjoyed over the last academic year.
Michael Garrett, Chief Executive of the charity says “Over the year, the children of Bablake Junior School have taken part in a range of activities with the charity including writing to isolated older people across the area and spending time with our volunteers at our activity centre in Earlsdon learning woodwork and knitting techniques. These intergenerational activities have helped children understand some of the issues faced by older people and the value of their knowledge and skills.”
Warren Honey, Headmaster of Bablake Junior School said, “This has been a wonderful link with an incredible local charity for the last year. Our children have been keen to embrace the opportunities of supporting Age UK Coventry and Warwickshire. In particular, it has been valuable to learn that as well as money donations, there are other ways to bring benefits to others, hence enriching their lives. The return gesture - when the volunteers taught skills to our children – was an equally important lesson: our society is enhanced by our collaboration and mutual appreciation.”
