MPs visit Age UK Coventry and Warwickshire's Dementia Day Opportunities

Published on 23 May 2023 09:24 AM

To mark Dementia Action Week, Age UK Coventry and Warwickshire invited local MPs to visit our Dementia Day Opportunities Services across Warwickshire. Matt Western, MP for Warwick and Leamington and Mark Pawsey, MP for Rugby and Bulkington both attended.

MP for Rugby and Bulkington, Mark Pawsey, visited our Claremont Centre in Rugby to see our service, with an opportunity to speak to our Chief Executive Michael Garrett, staff and clients and even join in with their musical quiz.

MP for Warwick and Leamington Matt Western, visited Age UK Coventry & Warwickshire’s Dementia Day Opportunities at James Court in Warwick on Friday 19th May. Mr Western toured the Day Opportunities Centre and spoke to staff, clients and Age UK Coventry and Warwickshire’s Chair of Trustees Gill Entwistle about the valuable activities and support offered to clients and carers by this local charity.

This year, Dementia Action Week focuses on increasing diagnosis rates. Age UK Coventry and Warwickshire encourages anyone who suspects that they, or someone they know, may have dementia, to book an appointment with their GP.

It is estimated that there are around 11,700 people across Coventry and Warwickshire living with dementia, with just 6,500 of those having a formal diagnosis. Whilst memory loss is the most well-known symptom of dementia, other common symptoms include problems with thinking skills, disorientation, struggling to follow things, mood and personality changes.

An early and accurate diagnosis can provide access to support both for the person with the diagnosis and their carer. Such support may include therapies, groups, medicines and may increase entitlement to financial benefits.

Information given to you following a diagnosis will help people around you understand what you’re going through and what you have been dealing with- dementia can cause changes to mood and behaviour.

Age UK Coventry and Warwickshire have a range of support for those who have a diagnosis of dementia.
