Dementia Action Week 2023

This year, the focus of Dementia Action Week is diagnosis following a sustained deop in dementia diagnosis rates for the first time ever.
It is estimated that there are around 11,700 people across Coventry and Warwickshire living with dementia, with just 6,500 of those having a formal diagnosis. Whilst memory loss is the most well-known symptom of dementia, other common symptoms include problems with thinking skills, disorientation, struggling to follow things, mood and personality changes. Having a diagnosis confirmed helps you to prepare for the future and in some cases, what you suspect could be dementia may not be- the symptoms may be due to another condition that could be treated.
Although getting a diagnosis of dementia can be daunting, 91% of people affected by dementia believe it’s better to know. Which is why Age UK Coventry & Warwickshire encourages those who think they, or someone they know may have symptoms of dementia to make an appointment with their local GP.
An early and accurate diagnosis can provide access to support both for the person with the diagnosis and their carer. Such support may include therapies, groups, medicines and may increase entitlement to financial benefits.
We have a range of support that we can offer those who have a diagnosis of dementia such as our Dementia Day Opportunities. The service can benefit those with an early diagnosis of dementia by encouraging choice, independence, socialisation and respite for carers. Our Information and Advice team can also help you check your benefits entitlement and support with the application process. Our team can also give support with navigating the social care system, discussing care at home and residential care options and support you by explaining care needs assessments and benefit entitlements.
More information on all the services we provide can be found here.
