Craig Tracey MP visits Age UK Coventry and Warwickshire

Published on 08 August 2023 09:04 AM

Age UK Coventry and Warwickshire invited the MP for North Warwickshire and Bedworth, Craig Tracey, to visit their Dementia Day Opportunities service in Atherstone on 26th July 2023.

On his visit, Mr Tracey had the opportunity to tour the service, meet with staff and clients, and speak to the charity’s Chief Executive, Michael Garrett and Head of Services, Reece McLarnon.

Reece McLarnon, Head of Services, said; “When MPs visit our services, it gives us an opportunity to showcase but also raise awareness of local community needs. Our Dementia Day Opportunities offer tailored support by caring, experienced and trained staff across Warwickshire. Through this we aim to encourage choice, independence and improvement in quality of life to people living with dementia.

An early and accurate dementia diagnosis can provide access to support both for the person with the diagnosis and their carer. Such support may include therapies, groups, medicines, and may increase entitlement to financial benefits. Information given to you following a diagnosis will help people around you understand what you’re going through and what you have been dealing with as a result of the changes dementia can have on your mood and behaviour.”

It is estimated that there are around 11,700 people across the city and county living with dementia, with just 6,500 of those having a formal diagnosis. Whilst memory loss is the most well-known symptom of dementia, other common symptoms include problems with thinking skills, disorientation, struggling to follow things, mood and personality changes.

Following his visit, Craig Tracey said “I really enjoyed my visit to meet the team at Age UK Coventry and Warwickshire to see the amazing work they are doing. Sadly, dementia is a condition which will affect many families across North Warwickshire and Bedworth, so it was incredibly reassuring to get to see first-hand the fantastic services that are being provided to those in our communities that need the support now. I would like to thank the charity for inviting me to join them for a few hours and for the dedicated work that they are doing."
