Intergenerational relationships offer valuable opportunities for both older and younger people to connect, collaborate and share knowledge and understanding.

Links with Coventry School Foundation:

Over the past two years, our collaborations with Bablake Junior School and King Henry VIII Junior School have demonstrated how such connections can enrich lives. Children have engaged in helping to alleviate loneliness and isolation by writing and making cards for local older people, helped with essential fundraising by donating to our charity shops and have been lucky enough to be taught some new skills at our Gilbert Richards Activity Centre where they engaged in activities such as woodwork and knitting.

These experiences have helped young people understand some of the challenges faced by older adults and offer a chance of raising awareness around ageing and ageism.

Paintings Plantation- link with Campion School in Leamington Spa
How volunteers have transformed scrubland to a sanctuary for students and older people in the community.

Age UK Coventry & Warwickshire are delighted to support the restoration and development of Paintings Plantation at Campion School, which has become a place to encourage students to grow vegetables and help maintain the plantation, for older people with dementia to visit at pre-arranged times with their carer and to allow volunteers to use their skills and pass them on.

The Plantation has grown from strength to strength, and is now also a part of the Bronze and Silver level  Duke of Edinburgh awards scheme. As part of this scheme, students are now able to grow vegetables and help maintain the planted areas supported by a dedicated small band of Age UK Coventry and Warwickshire volunteers.

What was once a dense, overgrown thicket has now become a vibrant sanctuary. Birds and insects thrive here, and it’s a place where people can gather to experience a sense of peace and calm.
