The British Gas Energy Trust can support struggling households with energy debt relief (nearly 2 million older households are experiencing fuel poverty across the UK).

As energy bills remain over 40% higher than in 2021/22, countless households are trapped in growing energy debt, struggling to stay afloat. The British Gas Energy Trust’s support funds offer a vital lifeline, but many people still don’t know it exists.

The British Gas Energy Trust is an independent charitable trust whose mission is to alleviate the detrimental impact of fuel poverty. Support is delivered through debt relief grants which can help households with up to £2,000 in fuel debt; a small grants programme that provides emergency energy vouchers and white goods through our trusted partners; and a programme that funds 38 money and energy advice charities throughout Britain.

The Trust currently has two support funds open, offering up to £2,000 in energy grants to British Gas and non-British Gas customers with debt on a prepayment meter or credit account.

Alongside other eligibility criteria, applicants must live in England, Scotland or Wales and be applying for a grant to clear debt on an electricity and/or gas account associated with their main residence.

These two funds provide an opportunity to act and make sure individuals in your community can access the help they desperately need.
