Stress less and move more

Mental Health Awareness Week 2024. Stress less and move more, connecting mind and body. To better understand the importance of movement in keeping good mental health, we need to talk about how our minds and bodies are connected. So, today, we're going to talk about something that affects us all at some point: stress and anxiety.
We all know what it feels like to be stressed, right? But did you know that prolonged stress and anxiety can take a toll on our physical health too? When we're constantly in ‘fight or flight’ mode, our bodies release stress hormones like cortisol, which, over time, can lead to many health problems, especially for us older adults.
From high blood pressure and weakened immune systems to digestive issues and even heart disease, the effects of stress on our bodies can be serious. Headaches, muscle pain, a dicky tummy, and fatigue are just a few of the unpleasant physical symptoms that many of us may experience.
One simple and effective way to relieve stress and anxiety is to focus on our bodies through movement and breathing.
Regular physical movement helps to reduce the levels of stress hormones in our bodies and release feel-good endorphins that lift our spirits and soothe our minds. And when we combine movement with intentional breathing exercises, we complete our natural stress cycle and return to calm and balanced state of mind.
So, here's your mission for today: Take a moment to pause, breathe deeply, and move your body in a way that feels good to you.
