Buzza Bus takes its first trips on St Mary's

Published on 14 February 2025 12:22 PM

With immense joy, we proudly unveil the arrival of a brand-new, fully accessible Electric Vehicle on the enchanting Isles of Scilly for 2025. Remarkably, within just a few months, the Buzza Bus has already embarked on over 1,000 journeys, providing support to those who are socially isolated, face mobility challenges, or struggle to access traditional modes of transport.

The Buzza Bus operates as a Dial-a-Ride service, managed by Age UK Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, offering door-to-door assistance on St. Mary’s. This new vehicle enables individuals to access a myriad of services and support, visit local shops, forge connections with others, attend appointments, transport passengers to and from the quay, and serve those from the off islands, ensuring they reach their pre-arranged destinations across St. Mary’s.

David, our exceptional driver, shared, "It is a life-saver for so many, preserving their independence while weaving bonds of friendship along the way. The new bus is thriving and promises a sustainable solution for the years to come."

Lee Davies, Age UK Cornwall Sustainability Lead, elaborated, "Without the generous support from Age UK Cornwall, Cornwall's Good Growth Fund, Drive Energy Ltd, and our local residents, we would have been unable to continue our transport services on St. Mary’s. The absence of this service would have proved challenging for local community transport, profoundly affecting all who rely on them."

As we journey into 2025, our aspiration is to connect with even more local people, services, and organisations, aiming for a magnificent milestone of 6,000 trips. We are well on our way, thanks to the unwavering support of everyone who has accompanied us on this remarkable path thus far.

Ann Lewis, Age UK Cornwall Transport Director, said, "This door-to-door accessible service is a safe form of transport and an absolute life line for people on the Isle of Scilly, it gives freedom of choice to passengers on when and where they want to travel, and is responsive to changes and urgent requests. We are so proud to operate this service and have a caring attentive driver."

The Buzza Bus dial-a-ride operates throughout the year and is bookable by calling 01872 223388 or our driver on 07810 747369.

The Buzza Bus rejuvenation project was part-funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Cornwall Council has been chosen by Government as a Lead Authority for the fund and is responsible for monitoring the progress of projects funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.”
