One of our members who attends Age UK Camden's Book Group was thrilled to be invited to celebrate 75 Years of the Cheltenham Literature Festival at 10 Downing Street. Four members of the monthly book group listened to an inspiring speech from Lisa Nandy, Secretary of State for Culture, Media, and Sport. In her speech, Nandy highlighted the importance and value of the creative industries and outlined the government’s upcoming plans to put more investment into the arts. After the speech, members spoke with Nandy and Rt Hon Jess Phillips about their experiences as older people in London and highlighted the importance of the arts to tackle loneliness and isolation.
Speaking after the event, one of the members of the book group, Caroline Want, said: “Lisa Nandy’s speech was heartfelt, enlightening, and I hope she manages 10% of what she’s trying to do because that would be a major leap forward."
