Liz King receives British Empire Medal for services to Square Mile Food Bank

Square Mile Food Bank was set up by Age UK City of London and Barbican resident Liz King at the start of the pandemic to provide an emergency response to people in food crisis. The volunteer-run service delivered fresh and tinned food to over 80 households a week between April and November. Dozens of volunteer packers, drivers and cyclists helped out over the 9 months the food bank was in operation, providing a life-line to people in the square mile and rescuing tonnes of food from City businesses that would otherwise have ended up in landfilll.
Earlier this month, the food bank closed its doors as beneficiaries were transferred to a more permanent provision offered by First Love Foundation, a charity in neighbouring Tower Hamlets. But the work wasn’t over for the team of dedicated volunteers, who organised a final Christmas bonanza, including treats and luxury items to help bring cheer over the festive period, made possible by law firm Partners Group.
Age UK City of London would like to extend a huge thank you to all of the tireless volunteers who made Square Mile Food Bank possible, most especially to the indefatigable Jo Bradman and Liz King. Liz is being recognised in the Queen’s honours list for her services to the community.
Any City resident who is in food crisis and would like to receive assistance from First Love Foundation should seek a referral from City Advice here.
