Could you offer befriending and companionship to a socially isolated older person with dementia or memory loss?

What does the role involve?

The service supports people living with memory loss and dementia who have been identified as isolated, living in the community. Volunteers are matched with an older person who would like a befriender to provide social contact and company by visiting them in their home.

What you will get out of it?

  • You'll be making a difference to the lives of older people.
  • You'll gain knowledge and insight into issues that impact on older people’s lives.
  • You'll have an opportunity to build confidence and skills in engaging with people.

What is expected of me?

We ask volunteers to commit to a regular weekly visit of 1-1.5 hours. Visits are made during the day (this can include weekends).

Dementia Befriending role description

"If you are thinking of becoming a dementia befriender I would say, go for it. You have nothing to lose and can make a real difference to someone's day. It's also flexible, so you can do it around other commitments. The team at Age UK Camden provide ongoing support and online pre-training as well, so you're well equipped."
