John Winning 18 June 1924 – 11January 2018

John Winning was a well-loved and active member of the Hampstead community. He served in the army as a Corporal and was awarded the Burma Star, after which he returned to London and worked for John Lewis for twenty years.

Brian O’Connell, Henderson Court day centre manager remembers John warmly; “I first met John over twelve years ago, at my interview for the post of Deputy Manger here at Henderson Court day centre in Hampstead. What struck me about John was his warmth and enthusiasm for the work that not just Henderson Court, but the wider organization of Age UK Camden carries out. He passionately believed that services provided by local charities make a real difference to the lives of so many older people.

He was Chairman of the members’ committee here for well over 20 years and we saw him very much as the voice of our members, he himself being a carer for his wife for many years, he saw the challenges that faced carers and the importance of having services such as ours on the doorstep.

We remember John in countless ways. He was a central part of his beloved darts team, as well as taking a full and active part in the life of the centre, including, at one time being somewhat of a carpet bowls star.

I will miss very much just popping over and having a chat and a cup of tea with him. His wisdom and years where invaluable to me.  His support as a member and friend, myself and the rest of the community here at Henderson Court we will miss greatly.”

Age UK Camden’s CEO Gary Jones said “John was a warm-hearted and hard-working man who cared for others. I’ll miss him – he always had a smile, some words of encouragement and a few questions. We used to chat about his time working for John Lewis too.”

There will be a service held Thursday 1 February at 1.30pm Golders Green Crematorium, East Chapel  followed by a reception at Henderson Court  as a way of marking Johns long standing contribution to the centre
