Staying Warm this winter

Published on 02 December 2024 10:00 AM

Winter can be a challenging time for older people, with colder temperatures increasing the risk of colds, flu and viruses, as well as aggravating long-term conditions like arthritis. Age UK Bristol is here to share practical tips to help you stay warm, healthy, and safe throughout the season.

Keep Your Home Warm Aim to keep your living room at 21°C and your bedroom at 18°C. Use draught excluders, thick curtains, and ensure your heating system is serviced annually. If you’re struggling with energy costs, contact Age UK Bristol for advice. You can also contact the Centre for Sustainable Energy for energy saving tips and support.

Dress in Layers Wearing several thin layers of clothing is more effective at trapping heat than a single thick layer. Opt for thermal underwear, woolly socks, and a cosy hat to retain body warmth, even indoors.

Eat Well and Stay Hydrated A balanced diet can help keep you warm and boost your immune system. Include plenty of hot meals and drinks throughout the day. Foods rich in vitamins C and D, such as citrus fruits and fortified cereals, can be particularly beneficial.

Stay Active Light exercise, such as stretching or walking indoors, can help maintain circulation and warmth. If mobility is an issue, try chair-based exercises to stay active and boost your mood.

Get a Flu Vaccine Protect yourself against seasonal illnesses by getting your flu jab and checking your eligibility for COVID-19 boosters. These are free for most older adults.

Seek Support Winter can feel isolating, so stay connected with friends, family, or local community groups. Age UK Bristol offers social opportunities through our Friends Ageing Better community. Sign up as a free member today. https://www.ageuk.org.uk/bristol/our-services/fab/
