Exciting New Groups Launched by Age UK Bradford District as part of the Bradford Buddy Scheme

Published on 03 March 2025 09:40 AM

Age UK Bradford District is thrilled to announce the launch of four exciting new groups as part of the Bradford Buddy Scheme, a programme designed to bring older people together, promote wellbeing, and reduce social isolation. These new groups: Cook & Eat in Great Horton, Shipley Book Club, Wrose Walkers, and Idle Arts & Crafts Group offer fantastic opportunities for people aged 50+ to stay active, meet new friends, and enjoy a range of engaging activities in a supportive community.

The Bradford Buddy Scheme provides a wide variety of social opportunities and activities across the district to help people feel more connected and supported. The scheme is funded by Bradford Council and is part of the Gig Buddies franchise.

Cook & Eat – Monthly starting Tuesday 25th February, 11:00am – 1:00pm at St John’s Church, Great Horton
Learn how to cook nutritious meals in a friendly group setting. Perfect for those wanting to improve their cooking skills while enjoying great company.

Shipley Book Club – Starting Tuesday 4th March, 2:30pm – 3:30pm at the Bothy Cafe, Shipley. Love books? This relaxed and welcoming book club is the perfect opportunity to share your passion for reading, discuss your latest reads, and connect with fellow book lovers.

Wrose Walkers – Starting Thursday 27th February, 10:00am – 11:00am from the Age UK Bradford District Wrose & Windhill Hub. A gentle walking group designed to encourage people to stay active while exploring local routes in good company. Whether you're a regular walker or just getting started, all abilities are welcome.

Arts & Crafts Group – Starting Thursday 13th March, 10:00am – 12:00 noon, Idle Library (Fortnightly). Get creative and enjoy crafting with others. Whether you're an experienced artist or just looking to try something new, this group offers a fun, relaxing space to explore your creativity. Tea and biscuits provided.

Joining one of these new groups is a fantastic way to stay active and engaged while doing something you enjoy. It’s an opportunity to make new friends through shared hobbies, helping to build meaningful connections with like-minded people. Taking part in activities can also boost confidence and encourage people to get out and about more often. Most importantly, these groups provide a welcoming and supportive community where everyone is valued and included.

Nicola Wilson, Head of Operations at Age UK Bradford District, said: "We’ve already seen so many wonderful friendships develop through the Bradford Buddy Scheme. These new group activities will help even more people to connect, share experiences, and build confidence. We know that taking part in social activities can make a real difference to wellbeing, and we’re excited to see these groups grow and thrive."

Can you help support the new groups?

Age UK Bradford District is also looking for people to volunteer their time to help run and support these group activities. Volunteering is a great way to give back, meet new people, and help create a welcoming space for older people to enjoy social connections.

If you have a passion for cooking, reading, walking, or arts and crafts and can spare a few hours, they would love for you to get involved! No experience is necessary—just enthusiasm and a friendly attitude.
