Our volunteers go above and beyond

One of our amazing volunteers, Kaval, ensured that Les had a 92nd birthday to remember, in fact "the best birthday I have had in 92 years!"

Kaval set off on a mission to not let lockdown be a barrier for marking the occasion. She put up a banner and balloons outside his house, arranged for his dinner to be delivered, sourced a gift he'd wanted at Christmas and organised a very special birthday message.

Les says "I was 92 last week, when I woke up and opened my curtains there was a birthday banner and balloons outside, my volunteer rang to wish me happy birthday and told me not to cook as she would drop some food off later. I had fish and chips brought to my door and a present.  My volunteer knew I wanted a CD at Christmas by Russell Watson and Aled Jones but I could not get it. My present was not only the CD but a video message from Aled Jones himself wishing me a happy birthday!"

The banner was then seen by the Bradford Council bin workers, who knocked on his door to sing him happy birthday, his neighbours all saw, making him feel like a celebrity himself!

Kaval went to such great efforts to make Les' day perfect. Putting up the banner at 2.30am so it was a true surprise, and getting in touch with Aled Jones' manager to get the video message.

This is such a heart warming story of the difference our volunteers have been making during the current crisis and we are so grateful to every one of them.

Thank you!
