Energy prices have been a huge talking point this winter, and as we findourselves in, yet another, cold snap – even seeing snowfall once again here in Bolton – the Information and Advice team here at Age UK Bolton have put together a selection of the best tips for saving energy and saving money in your home this winter.
Money Saving Energy Tip #1: Block those Draughts!
‘Fitting draught-proofing strips to windows and doors is a relatively quick and easy job that can make a big difference. Cutting out draughts stops heat from escaping and prevents cold air from entering your home. You’ll feel warmer and might even be able to turn your heating down.
Money Saving Energy Tip #2: Calculate heater costs!
Thinking of getting a heater to save on gas central heating costs? Beware as electric heaters can be very expensive. Calculate how much your heater costs to run here.

Money Saving Energy Tip #3: Pay your bills a cheaper way!
The most expensive way to pay for your energy bills is by quarterly credit (paying upon receipt of a bill). You may be able to instantly save money on your energy bills by changing the way you pay. Check with your energy supplier to see if they offer discounts for: paying by direct debit, paperless billing, dual fuel
Money Saving Energy Tip #4: Don't risk not using your stairlift this winter!
We have been alarmed to find out that some people have been opting not to use their stairlifts to save money on electricity.
The cost of using your stairlift is not as much as you may think, while the risk of a dangerous fall will massively increase.

Money Saving Energy Tip #5: Check your Gas Flow
Checking the gas flow of your Condenser Combi Boiler can save around 9% in Gas, leading to savings across all your gas use, without noticing much difference in the temperature of your home. Find out more here
Money Saving Energy Tip #6: lowering the temperature of the heating on the thermostat by just one degree.
Having the thermostat set at just one degree lower than you usually have it can save approximately £100 per year.

Money Saving Energy Tip #7: Make use of a smart meter!
While a smart meter won’t directly save you money on your energy bills, the ability it gives you to monitor how much energy you are using gives you more insight into where energy savings can be made.
Money Saving Energy Tip #8: Find out if you are eligible for the “Extra Care Register”
Electricity North West, as well as most gas, electricity and water companies have extra care registers to provide more help, care and support to customers who need it. Speak to Electricity North West and your suppliers to find out more and get yourself signed up.

Money Saving Energy Tip #9: Electricity costs a lot more than gas.
Currently the Government Energy Price Guarantee means that a unit of electricity is 38.9p and gas is 11.63p If you are substituting gas heating for electricity make sure it makes financial sense. On many electrical heaters the controls are not very sensitive. New regulations called ‘Lot 20’ mean compliant manufacturers have to comply with a specific efficiency standard and ultimately save you money. Look for the Lot 20 logo when buying new electrical heaters. find out more about Lot 20 here.
Money Saving energy Tip #10: Tips for storage heaters
If you have storage heaters make sure you are on the Economy 7 electricity tariff as this is cheaper. Make sure you know how to use your heaters effectively. find out more on using heaters effectively here.
