Older Persons Day 2024

We are pleased to announce that we will be hosting Older People's Day at Broad Street Mall on Tuesday 1st October 2024.
Reading will be celebrating National Older People's Day on Tuesday 1st October 2024 with a free fun-packed event at Broad Street Mall. The day runs from 9.30am until 2pm, highlighting the contribution older people make to the Reading community.
Older People’s Day coincides with the UN International Day of Older Persons. The main aim for the day is to be a celebration of the achievements and contributions that older people make to our society and the economy. Older People’s Day supports the campaign to challenge negative attitudes and outdated stereotypes. The theme for 2024 is:
‘Celebrating Older People’
Reading is a vibrant town with a rich array of local services that support residents, come along and find out how they can help you.
The Royal Berkshire Hospital MEET PEET team will also be offering free health checks and hearing tests on the day.
The programme will include:
10am: Event starts with opening remarks by The Mayor of Reading
11.00am: Seated exercise with Kate from Get Berkshire Active
12.15pm: Dunsden Green Country Dance club
1:30pm: Age UK Berkshire Choir
Additional activities on the day include:
- Pension credit surgery- information, advice and support around entitlement to pension credit and other benefits.
- Free benefits check**- delivered by Citizens Advice Reading and Age UK Berkshire.
- Free hearing tests - (10am-12pm) - offered by the Audiology Team at Royal Berkshire Hospital
We will be joined by around 30 organisations such as OddFellows Society, Age UK Reading, Berkshire Vision, Get Berkshire Active, U3A and more. They will have information stalls offering advice on a wide range of services.

** If you wish to have a complete benefit check undertaken please have the following information with you on the day:
- your National Insurance number
- your bank account details
- information about your income, savings and investments (including council tax statement)
- information about your pension (if you have one, ideally a pension statement)
- details of any housing costs you have (such as a mortgage, interest payments, housing benefit, tenancy details or service charges)
- your partner’s details, if you have a partner (including date of birth, complete income details, savings)
- any children/ carers living in same location
- any other benefits already being received (e.g. disability benefit and rate)
