Local Musician Takes on Half Marathon Challenge

Let's hear it for Will our music legend who plays beautifully for our Memory Groups and who is now running the #Bathhalfmarathon to raise funds towards a new minibus! This minibus is crucial for bringing people to our groups, and Will is already a fundraising superstar, raising over half of his goal. 

Wills Story...

"Last year, I started playing music for the Memory Groups at Age UK Bath & North East Somerset and it's been an eye-opening experience. The impact of music, combined with the exercises and content of each session, has been profoundly beneficial for everyone involved. Seeing the smiles and the brightness it brings to their days has been nothing short of heartwarming.

But I realised there was more I could do. The charity needs a new minibus to help people attend the groups and there was my opportunity to contribute further. I’ve never considered myself a runner, and tackling this distance is a first for me. But I’m driven by the support and generosity of our wonderful community. Their donations to my fundraiser have made the gruelling training sessions enjoyable, and I’m finding myself getting fitter for a great cause.

This challenge is also deeply personal to me. Being part of a mission to help those experiencing different stages of dementia is crucial. I’ve seen friends and family face similar challenges, and I understand how tough it can be without the right support. Playing music at the groups has always been rewarding. It’s a reminder of how music can soothe the soul, no matter who you are.

I’ll never forget the kind words I received from one gentleman before Christmas. He complimented my singing voice, which was particularly flattering coming from someone who’s usually quite forthright with his opinions!

As for the half marathon, I’m aiming to finish in around 2 hours and 30 minutes. But honestly, just crossing that finish line will be a huge achievement for me. The rush and energy from the other participants will surely carry me through to the end.
