Age UK Bath & North East Somerset proudly welcomes the Somer Valley Community Bus, a cherished institution with over 50 years of service, from the Midsomer Norton & Radstock Community Service Vehicle Trust.
This significant handover marks a legacy that has been an indispensable lifeline for hundreds of residents in the Somer Valley community. Initiated over half a century ago by the Midsomer Norton & Radstock Community Service Vehicle Trust, the Community Bus was created with a vision to ensure that older members of the public could continue to be fully involved in activities by attending social events and gatherings, even if physical mobility was a challenge. The service has since become an integral part of the community fabric, touching the lives of many people who rely on it month after month.
Melvyn Johnson, Chair of Midsomer Norton & Radstock Community Service Vehicle Trust said:
"Over the past 50 years, we have witnessed the impact this service has had and I am immensely proud of what we have achieved and this is down to an incredible bunch of dedicated volunteers. Knowing that Age UK Bath & North East Somerset will continue this legacy fills me with pride. May future generations experience the same strong sense of community and support for the next 50 years!
The successful transition was made possible in part by a grant from the West of England Combined Authority (WECA), a testament to the recognition of the importance of this transport service.
Simon Allen, CEO of Age UK Bath & North East Somerset said:
“We are proud to take over the stewardship of this essential Community Bus service. Community Transport like this is vital for ensuring that people stay connected and can fully engage in the richness of life. They not only benefit groups of individuals but also demonstrate the unwavering commitment and dedication of volunteers who run it, to the wellbeing of our community. “
