Top Tips for Staying Safe and Warm This Winter
As the cold snap approaches, it’s vital to stay warm, safe, and connected. At Age UK Bath & North East Somerset, we understand how challenging this time of year can be, especially for older people, so here are our top tips to help you get through the freezing weather comfortably and safely.
1. Keep Your Home Warm
"One of the most important things you can do is to keep your home at a safe temperature. Ideally, your living room should be around 21°C (70°F) during the day, and your bedroom no lower than 18°C (64°F) at night. If heating the whole house isn’t possible, focus on keeping one or two main rooms warm."
-
Close your curtains at dusk to keep heat in, and use draught excluders to stop cold air from coming through doors or windows.
-
If you’re struggling with heating costs, you might be entitled to financial help. Please don’t hesitate to contact us for advice—we’re here to help.
2. Dress in Layers
"Wrap up warmly, even indoors. Several thin layers will keep you warmer than one thick layer because they trap heat between them. And don’t forget warm socks, a hat, and gloves when you’re heading outside."
- Cover your mouth with a scarf when outdoors to warm the air you breathe and reduce the risk of chest infections.
3. Eat Well and Drink Hot Drinks
"Keeping your body fuelled is essential for staying warm. Try to have at least one hot meal a day—soups, stews, or casseroles are great choices—and drink plenty of hot tea or coffee throughout the day."
- It’s also a good idea to stock up on non-perishable foods in case the weather makes it harder to get out.
4. Keep Moving
"Staying active generates body heat, so try to avoid sitting still for long periods. Even small movements like stretching, walking around the house, or doing light chair exercises can make a difference."
5. Prepare for Bad Weather
"Cold weather can bring unexpected challenges, so it’s worth planning ahead."
-
Keep essentials like medication, a torch, and warm blankets handy.
-
If you’re worried about icy paths, consider wearing shoes with good grip or asking someone to help clear them.
6. Get Your Winter Vaccinations
"Flu and COVID-19 can be more dangerous in winter, so make sure you’re up to date with your vaccinations. These are free for those over 65 or with certain health conditions, and they’re a simple but effective way to protect yourself."
7. Check on Neighbours and Relatives
"Winter can be especially tough for people who live alone, so we’re urging everyone to check in on neighbours or relatives who might find it harder to get out. A phone call or a quick visit could make a huge difference to someone’s well-being. You could even offer to help with shopping or clearing paths if the weather gets bad."
