Age UK Barnsley are proudly commissioned by Barnsley Council to provide social inclusion projects designed to build stronger communities and tackle social isolation in five areas of Barnsley (Central, North, North East and South)
What are our Social Inclusion Projects?
Community Involvement:
Local people will be involved by contributing their local knowledge and ideas and acting as ‘eyes on the ground’ to keep a lookout for older people who might be isolated or lonely.
Group Activities:
The project will support existing groups and set up new groups with local people where you can go and meet like minded people, make new friends and try new experiences.
Good Neighbour Scheme:
The Good Neighbour Scheme will provide practical and social support for older people who need a bit of extra help and find getting out difficult. Age UK Barnsley will also be looking to recruit a team of volunteers who would like to be a ‘Good Neighbour’.
Examples of Social Inclusion support include:
• Visiting someone regularly for a chat and a cuppa.
• Collecting shopping or a prescription when someone can’t get to the shops.
• Popping in to see someone if they’re not well.
• Doing a simple task in the house such as clearing snow or fallen leaves to keep someone safe.
• Accompanying someone who doesn't feel confident when going out to help build their confidence.
Health and Wellbeing
Health and Wellbeing Groups are aimed at supporting people to make healthy choices. This involves exercise, healthy eating demonstrations and mindfulness in a fun, inclusive environment to support heart health.
"My Community, My Life" - Central Area Social Inclusion Project
The 'My Community, My LIfe' Service funded by the Central Area Council and delivered by Age UK Barnsley covers the Central, Dodworth, Kingstone, Stairfoot & Worsbrough wards. The service aims to support people aged 50 and over to meet others and enjoy later life. We can provide 1:1 support to identify plans and solutions for people who are feeling socially isolated.
We are looking at working together with local people in the Central area to find out what activities and groups are currently available for older people in that part of Barnsley.
We will be listening to what local people have to say and from this we will be able to identify what new activities and groups local people would like to have access to.
