Could you spare some time to brighten someone’s day?

Published on 14 March 2023 08:28 AM

Age UK Barnsley is looking for volunteers to join their befriending team to support elderly people who are experiencing loneliness and isolation.

Befriending volunteers are matched with an older person and visit them in their own homes, increasing their social interactions and their sense of inclusion within the community.

The volunteering opportunity is open to all aged 18 or above, and full training is provided. There is no set amount of time required from volunteers, with visits arranged around the volunteer’s own schedule.

Age UK Barnsley CEO Debby Bunn said:

“If you’ve got some spare time, this is a great opportunity to make a difference to someone’s life. The older people we work with are often frail which can make it difficult for them to get out and meet people, and a result they can feel very isolated. Our befriending volunteers visit them in their own homes to check in on them, to have a chat and a cup of tea – it’s very simple but it can make all the difference to somebody if they are feeling lonely.

“It can also provide you with a sense of purpose for your own day, and the knowledge that you’re helping somebody else is really fulfilling.”

“There are so many benefits to volunteering. We all have stories to tell – sometimes all it takes to really make someone’s day is a simple conversation, and we can all learn from each other. It’s also a great chance to develop new skills and use existing ones, regardless of what stage you are at in your life and career.”
