'Volunteering has made me grateful for the little things'
Trainee doctor Lucy has had many volunteering roles at Age UK Barnet and is currently volunteering as a dementia befriender
‘Volunteering with Age UK Barnet has not only helped me work on my people skills and the way I communicate with elderly people, but has reminded me to be grateful everyday for the little things that we so often take for granted - having companionship, being able to mobilise easily and independently, and much more.
'I'm grateful for the opportunity to be able to provide some kind of support towards the older people in the borough, whether that be emotional or physical. Working in a role such as dementia befriending, there are huge challenges and emotional moments since these clients are extremely vulnerable.
'Yet, I have always felt extremely well supported at Age UK Barnet, where I can be confident that the staff and the Befriending Team care about clients and volunteers alike.’
