'It's hard for people who haven't grown up with tech, like me!'
Ramisa started as a digital inclusion volunteer for us when she was in year 11, helping out at the digital support sessions that we held at her school, QE Girls. Now 23, she’s back at the Ann Owens centre helping out in our computer support sessions.
'I’ve been volunteering on and off since I was 15, so I’m in the habit of volunteering. When I was 15 I volunteered because it looked good on your CV, but now actually enjoy it – I enjoy meeting people and solving their problems. It’s satisfying.
'I’m much better at technology since I first started volunteering but it’s clear how different it is for people who haven’t grown up with technology like me. What seems like second nature to me is very hard for someone who is new to tech. I have a lot of sympathy for the people struggling with their devices and it feels good helping people through this and making them understand.
'A lot of what people want to know is about communication - how to stay in touch with people and how to find out about the world. So I spend a lot of time teaching participants to send text messages and respond to emails – as well as catch up with news or listening to the radio online.
'Technology is all about helping us communicate better and it's great to be able to help people use their devices to stay in touch with what's going on in the world as well as friends and family.'
