Cookery tutors
Background
Our cookery classes are open to all participants are over 55 with many well into their 80’s attending regularly. They attend the classes for various reasons. Some enjoying cooking and want to expand their knowledge, while others enjoy cooking in a group and value the companionship of their fellow participants.
In the majority of our classes the participants cook together and then sit together to enjoy the meal they have just cooked. For some, the cooking class is the only proper home cooked meal they will eat that day or even that week.
We currently run cookery classes at the
Ann Owens Centre, Oak Lane,
London N2 8LT
Monday mornings and Thursday evenings from 5 pm
However, there is the possibility of additional time slots and venues within the Borough of Barnet
Tutor Role
Ideally, we would like you to commit to a minimum of three consecutive sessions, but are happy for courses to be longer than that.
We generally have a theme for our sessions - currently our focus is on healthy, nutritious food and flavours from around the world.
However, your classes can be focused on any topic related to your expertise. We are very happy to let you come up with some ideas on what you want to teach. Once you have an outline plan, we can discuss the practicalities on how it can work. Our participants come from a diverse cultural background, and many have dietary restrictions or allergies so you will need to be mindful of catering for their needs.
We have a lovely group of cookery volunteers who have a passion for food. These ladies and gentlemen volunteer their time to support the participants and the teacher in the classes and the help with cleaning up. We also encourage the participants to get involved and also to help with clearing up. In effect they will help you as part of a team to run the class
The number of volunteers attending each session depends on their availability, but we try and ensure there are at least 2 helpers per class.
Practical aspects
We ask the tutor to design, and deliver a cookery session, within a budget.
That will cover choosing user friendly recipes; (we will print these), preparing a shopping list; leading the class on the day, and being responsible to check that the kitchen is left clean and tidy.
We can order the items on the shopping list and arrange for them to be delivered to the centre.
You do not have to have formal teaching or catering qualifications for this role but you will be required to have a current food hygiene certificate (which we can arrange) and to undertake some allergy training.
Payment
We will pay tutors a rate to cover the whole session. This is currently £60.
Tutors will be self employed and will be asked to complete a basic agreement with Age UK Barnet, and invoice us for a group of classes.
Tutors will not be employed by Age UK Barnet
